Does Cleanliness Prevent Cockroaches: An Honest Answer
The polite answer to this question is that cleaning helps. It does, and stopping there leaves people scrubbing a kitchen that was already clean while the actual causes go untouched.
The honest answer has two parts: cleaning affects how fast a population grows, and it does not decide whether one starts.
What decides whether one starts
Introduction. German cockroaches do not appear spontaneously and do not come up from drains — they arrive, in a cardboard box, a second-hand appliance, a bag from a market, or through a shared wall from a neighbouring unit.
That is why a spotless apartment above a restaurant, or next to a unit with a problem, can have cockroaches while doing everything right, and why an untidy house in an isolated location may never have them.
What decides how fast it grows
Water first, which is the one people underestimate. Cockroaches survive far longer without food than without moisture, and a dripping tap, a damp sink cabinet or a wet cloth in a sink is worth more to a population than crumbs.
Then harbourage: gaps of two to five millimetres where an insect can contact a surface on both sides. Then food, and here the relevant food is not what is on the counter — it is grease film inside an extract hood, residue under a fridge seal, crumbs in the gap between two cabinet units, cardboard, and soap film.

Why cleaning cannot reach it
A nightly wipe covers the visible surfaces. The productive locations in any kitchen are the plinth void, the space behind and under appliances, the inside of the hood body, and the gap where a pipe passes through a cabinet back.
None of those are part of a normal cleaning routine, and all of them will support a population indefinitely while the room above them is immaculate.
What cleaning does achieve
It removes surface food that supports the periphery of a population. It disturbs harbourage, and disturbance is a genuine control mechanism — an undisturbed space is the scarcest resource a household pest can find.
And it makes evidence visible. A clean cabinet where droppings appear is a cabinet where somebody notices in week one rather than month four, and that timing is worth more than the cleaning itself.
What to do instead of cleaning harder
Fix the drip and dry the sink cabinet. Seal the pipe penetration. Pull out the fridge and washing machine twice a year and clean the floor under them. Break down cardboard the day it arrives. Keep floor drain traps filled. Store dry goods in rigid sealed containers.
None of that is cleaning in the usual sense and all of it does more than an extra hour with a cloth.

The part that matters emotionally
It is worth saying directly, because it changes behaviour. Households that believe cleanliness decides the outcome are slow to report a problem, since reporting feels like an admission.
In an apartment building that delay is expensive for everyone — a population that could have been resolved in one unit in week two is in three units by month four. A neighbour who tells you early is doing you a favour rather than confessing something.
There is a version of this question that does have a clean answer, and it concerns ants rather than cockroaches. Ant foraging responds directly to accessible food and water, so wiping spills promptly, storing sugar and honey sealed, and keeping pet bowls clean genuinely does reduce ant activity in a way that is visible within days. Where cleanliness has a straightforward effect, ants are the case.
The restaurant version
The same misunderstanding operates commercially and costs more. A kitchen with immaculate stainless surfaces and a plinth void that has not been opened since installation is a clean kitchen with a harbourage problem, and the change that resolves it is a quarterly equipment-moving deep clean rather than a nightly one.

Common questions
So there is nothing I can do about prevention?
There is a great deal, and it is mostly not cleaning. Controlling introduction — no cardboard stored, second-hand appliances checked, dry goods in sealed containers — plus removing water and sealing harbourage covers almost all of it. Those measures are more effective and considerably less effort than cleaning more.
My apartment is clean and my neighbour is not. Is it their fault?
Possibly in the sense that a population next door creates pressure on your unit, and it is not a useful frame for getting anything resolved. What matters is the routes between the units, which is something you can seal on your own side without anyone else agreeing to anything.
Does this apply to other species too?
Broadly, with variations. Ants are driven by food and water availability and cleaning helps more directly. Rodents respond to food access and shelter rather than to surface cleanliness. Bed bugs are entirely unrelated to hygiene and arrive with travel. Stored product pests arrive in packaging. In none of these is cleaning the deciding variable.
