A gym is the most humid commercial interior most people ever use, and humidity is the whole story. Wet rooms, steam, laundry, towels in transit and drainage running all day give cockroaches and small flies conditions that a dry office never provides. The work concentrates on water, not on the gym floor.
The four places it starts
Wet rooms and drainage. Shower gullies, steam room bases, sauna surrounds, plunge pools and the floor drains in changing rooms. Traps that dry out over a quiet period become an open pipe from the building's drainage into your changing room, and that is the commonest single cause of an American cockroach appearing on a wet floor.
Laundry and towel handling. Warm damp textiles in a closed bin overnight are a breeding medium for flies and an attractant for cockroaches. Where towels are washed on site, the machine surrounds and the lint trap matter more than the folding area.
Equipment voids. The underside of a treadmill deck, the base of a cable machine, the space under fixed benches and inside upholstered pads. Warm, undisturbed and never cleaned into.
The juice bar or café counter. Small, often an afterthought, and the only part of the premises with sugar. Fruit flies here are almost guaranteed unless the drip trays and drains are on a cycle.
Why the treatment has to be low-residue
People here are barefoot, lying on surfaces, sweating and breathing hard. That rules out broad residual spraying of floors, mats and upholstery — not because it would be ineffective, but because the exposure is wrong for the setting. A gym programme uses gel bait in voids, drain treatment, monitors, and targeted residual work confined to plinths, service voids and back-of-house. Anything applied in a treatment area is applied out of hours and to surfaces members do not contact.
Spas, treatment rooms and linen
A spa adds two things: heated linen and small dark cupboards. Both are bed bug territory if the business also handles guest belongings — a robe store, a locker room with fabric benches, a relaxation room with heavy cushions. It is rare, but when it happens in a spa it spreads through the linen circuit rather than through the rooms, so the response has to include the laundry cycle and not just the room where it was seen.
What a wellness programme includes
- Drain and gully treatment on a defined cycle, with a check that every trap holds water — including seldom-used ones.
- Gel bait and monitors in equipment voids, under fixed benches and in the base of cable and rack frames.
- Changing room, locker base and shower channel inspection at every visit.
- Laundry area, lint trap and towel bin treatment.
- Juice bar or counter: drip trays, pourers, waste and the gap behind the counter run.
- Out-of-hours scheduling as standard, with a written record per visit.
Members notice more than office workers do
A gym member is in the same room for an hour with nothing to do but look at it. One cockroach on a changing room floor is remembered and repeated; one in an office corridor is not. That asymmetry is the argument for a monthly rather than a quarterly cycle in wet areas, even when nothing has been reported.

Common questions
Is anything sprayed on mats, benches or upholstery?
No. Contact surfaces in a gym or spa are not treated with residual product. Work in those areas is gel bait in enclosed voids, monitors, and physical inspection. Anything else would be the wrong trade-off for the setting.
We only get insects in the changing room. Why?
Because that is where the water is. Changing rooms combine drainage, humidity, warmth and organic residue in one room, and a shower gully that has dried out during a quiet week connects it directly to the building drain. It is the first place we look and usually the last place a general treatment reaches.
Can you work while we are open?
For back-of-house and drainage, yes. For treatment areas, no — those are done before opening or after closing. On a contract we hold a fixed out-of-hours slot so it does not need arranging each month.
The maintenance items that matter more than treatment
In a wet environment, four building items decide most of the outcome, and none of them is a pest control product. Every floor gully must hold water — pour a litre down any drain in a room used less than weekly. Extract fans in wet rooms must actually run, because a shower room that stays wet overnight is a different environment from one that dries. Silicone at floor-to-wall junctions must be intact, since a failed joint is a void behind the tile. And the towel bin must have a lid and be emptied nightly, not in the morning.
A studio that gets those four right typically halves its treatment requirement within two months. We list them on every report because they are cheaper than anything we can sell you.
