German and American Cockroaches: Two Different Problems

These two species share a name and almost nothing else. Which one you have decides whether you need a plumber or a treatment.

Almost every cockroach question we are asked in Ho Chi Minh City comes down to one distinction, and it is a distinction most people do not know exists.

Two species dominate here. One lives inside your kitchen and breeds there continuously. The other lives in drains and sewers and appears indoors as a visitor. They need entirely different responses, and confusing them wastes both money and months.

Telling them apart

The German cockroach is small — 1 to 1.5 cm — light brown or tan, with two dark parallel stripes running back from behind the head. It is found in kitchens, near warmth and food, and it does not fly in any useful sense.

The American cockroach is large — 3 to 4 cm — reddish-brown and glossy, with a pale margin behind the head rather than stripes. It is fast, it can glide, and it is found in bathrooms, on service balconies, in basements and near floor drains.

Where they live, which is the whole point

The German cockroach is an obligate indoor species in this climate. It does not live outdoors, it does not come up from the drains, and a population in your kitchen originated inside a building — arriving in a cardboard box, an appliance, a bag of shopping or from an adjoining unit.

The American cockroach lives in drainage systems, sewers, basements and voids. It enters homes through floor drains whose water seals have dried out, through gaps around waste pipes, and under doors. It is not living in your apartment; it is passing through.

What this means for the response

For the American cockroach the answer is usually plumbing rather than treatment. Fill every floor trap, seal the gap where the waste pipe passes through the cabinet, and the sightings stop. Where a building has a genuine drainage population, drain treatment addresses the source.

For the German cockroach the answer is a proper treatment, and speed matters. A female carries an egg case containing thirty to forty eggs, produces several in her lifetime, and the whole cycle from egg to adult takes about two months in these conditions. A population that is trivial in week one is not trivial in month three.

Why one is seen and the other is not

You see American cockroaches because they are large, they move in the open and they are in the wrong place. You do not see German cockroaches, because they stay pressed into cracks and voids and emerge only in darkness and only as far as they must.

This inverts the usual intuition. One large cockroach a month is a plumbing observation. One small striped cockroach seen in daylight is a signal that the harbourage is crowded, which means the population is already substantial.

The evidence each leaves

German cockroaches leave small dark specks like ground pepper in cabinet corners, behind appliances and along hinge lines, together with shed skins and empty egg cases. There is often a distinctive musty odour where a population is established.

American cockroaches leave larger, ridged droppings, usually near drains and in wet areas, and much less concentrated evidence indoors because they are not living there.

The photograph that settles it

Size and stripes. A photograph with a coin or a fingertip for scale answers the question in seconds, and it is the single most useful thing you can send before booking anything. We would rather look at a picture and tell you to pour water down a drain than attend and charge you for the same conclusion.

The two other species you may meet

The brown-banded cockroach is small like the German but with banding across the wings rather than stripes behind the head, and it prefers warm dry locations higher up — inside electronics, behind picture frames, in furniture — rather than kitchens. The Oriental cockroach is dark, almost black, slower, and associated with damp and drains like the American.

Both are less common here than the two main species, and the brown-banded one is worth knowing about because its preference for warm dry places means treatment of the kitchen alone will miss it entirely.

Common questions

Can German cockroaches come up from the drains?

No, and this is the most useful single fact in this article. They are an indoor species that does not survive in drainage systems, so a German cockroach population in your kitchen came in through the door in something, or through a shared wall from a neighbouring unit. That changes where you look and what you fix.

Do American cockroaches breed inside apartments?

Rarely, and only where there is a persistently wet sheltered space such as a basement, a permanently damp void or a defective drain beneath a slab. In a normal apartment they are visitors, which is why the response is to close the route rather than to treat the rooms.

I have both. What comes first?

The German cockroach population, because it grows and the other does not. Deal with the kitchen properly, and handle the American cockroaches at the same time with drain seals and a drain treatment — that half of the work is cheap and mostly does not involve product at all.
