Bathroom Floor Traps: The Open Pipe in Every Home

The most common reason a spotless apartment reports large cockroaches is a floor drain in a bathroom nobody uses. The fix takes a minute and costs nothing.

If you live in Ho Chi Minh City and large cockroaches appear in your bathroom in a home you keep spotless, the explanation is almost always the same and it is not about cleaning. A floor drain has dried out, and a dry drain is an open pipe from the building's drainage system into your room.

How a floor trap is supposed to work

Under the grating is a bend that holds a small volume of water. That water is the seal: it lets waste through and blocks everything travelling the other way — gases, smells and insects. It works perfectly as long as it holds water.

In this climate it evaporates faster than people expect. In an unventilated bathroom at 30 °C a trap that receives no water can lose its seal in one to two weeks. In an air-conditioned room with the door closed it can go faster.

Which drains dry out

  • The second bathroom in a two-bathroom apartment, used only when guests visit.
  • The drain in the shower area of a bathroom where everyone uses the bath, or the reverse.
  • Balcony and laundry drains in the dry months, December to April.
  • Every drain in an apartment left empty while you travel — which is why people return from three weeks away to a problem that was not there before.
  • Kitchen floor drains in apartments that have them, if the kitchen is used lightly.

The fix, and how often

Pour a litre of water down every floor drain in the property, including the ones you never use. Do it once a fortnight in the dry season and once a month in the rains, and before you leave for any trip longer than a week. That is the entire remedy, and it prevents more American cockroach complaints than any product does.

If a drain has an obvious smell even when wet, the seal may be broken rather than dry — a cracked trap or a badly fitted grating. That is a plumbing job, not a pest job, and no treatment will hold until it is done.

Why this species is different

American cockroaches — the large ones, 35–40 mm, that fly clumsily — live in the drainage system, not in your home. They come up, wander, and go back. They do not breed in a clean bathroom, and their presence says nothing about how the home is kept. That is why treating the room alone gives a few quiet days and then a repeat: the population is in the pipe, and the fix is the seal. The species page on cockroaches covers the distinction, and why pests come back after a treatment covers the pattern.

The other three routes in a bathroom

When the traps are wet and the problem continues, there are three more openings worth checking, and all three are common in buildings here.

  • The pipe penetration behind the toilet. Where the waste pipe passes through the wall or floor there is usually a gap left by the installer, often hidden by the ceramic. It opens directly into the service void.
  • The wash-basin waste. A bottle trap that has been replaced with a flexible hose has no reliable seal, and flexible hoses sag into a shape that drains itself.
  • The ceiling access panel. Many apartments have a removable panel above the shower for the drainage above. If the panel is not sealed, the whole ceiling void is connected to the bathroom.

None of these is expensive to close. All three are worth checking before anybody applies a second treatment.

Ventilation changes the whole picture

A bathroom that dries within an hour of use behaves completely differently from one that stays damp all day. If the extract fan does not run, or runs into a blocked duct, the room stays at high humidity permanently — which suits cockroaches, silverfish and drain flies, and accelerates the evaporation problem by keeping the room warm. Getting the fan working is a maintenance job that quietly removes several pest problems at once, and in a rented apartment it is normally the owner's responsibility. See pest control for landlords and property managers for where that responsibility usually falls.

After heavy rain

Expect more of them for a day or two after a storm. Rain fills the drainage system and pushes what lives there upward and outward. It is temporary and it is not a sign that anything failed. Wet traps and sealed pipe penetrations are what keep them in the pipe while it happens — see rainy season pest control.

Common questions

Can I just cover the drain instead?

A cover helps but it is not a seal. Most covers sit loose in the grating and lift when air pressure changes in the stack, which happens every time a neighbour flushes. A silicone one-way drain insert works better, but water in the trap is still the primary defence and costs nothing.

Does pouring bleach down the drain help?

Not for this. Bleach passes straight through and does nothing to the population living in the drain line, and it will not keep the trap full. A litre of plain water achieves the seal, which is the thing that actually matters.

We pour water in and they still come. What now?

Then either the trap is damaged, or the route is not the trap at all — an unsealed pipe penetration through the wall or slab, a gap around the toilet waste, or a ventilation duct. A technician will find which, and the fix is usually sealant rather than insecticide.
