Why Ants Keep Appearing in Your Kitchen, and What Actually Stops Them

A line of ants across the kitchen counter comes from a nest somewhere else. Why they come, why spraying the trail backfires, and the steps that actually reduce them.

Quick answer. Ants in the kitchen are scouts and workers from a nest that is usually outside the room: in a wall void, under tiles, in a planter or outside the building. They come for sugar, grease, crumbs, pet food and water, and they leave a scent trail that the rest of the colony follows. Wiping or spraying the line of ants kills the workers you can see and scatters the rest, and some species then split into more nests. What works is removing the food and water, finding where the trail goes in, and treating the route and the nest rather than the ants on the counter.

Why the kitchen

  • Food: sugar, cooking oil, crumbs under appliances, fruit bowls and pet bowls.
  • Water: sink cabinets, dripping taps, condensation behind the fridge. In the dry season ants come in for water as much as food.
  • Warmth and cover: gaps behind cabinets, under the sink and around appliance motors.
  • Short routes: pipe entries, tile joints, window frames and the gap under the balcony door.

Why spraying the trail makes it worse

A household spray kills the ants on the surface for a day. The colony keeps sending workers along the same scent trail. With some small species common in apartments, such as ghost ants and pharaoh ants, stress on the colony makes queens move and start new nests, so one nest becomes several.

What to do yourself

  1. Follow the trail at a quiet time to see where the ants come in: a tile joint, a pipe hole, a window frame.
  2. Take away the food: wipe surfaces with detergent (it removes the scent trail), store sugar and oil in sealed containers, lift pet bowls at night.
  3. Take away the water: fix drips, dry the sink cabinet, empty the dish rack.
  4. Seal the entry you found with silicone once the trail has gone.
  5. Leave baits alone if you use them: ants must carry bait back to the nest, so do not spray near bait stations.

When to call us

  • Ants keep coming back after two or three weeks of the steps above.
  • You see ants in electrical sockets, appliances or inside sealed food.
  • There are fire ants (red-brown, painful sting) on the balcony or ground floor.

Our ant control service combines residual spray along the routes ants use with bait placed near the nest, and visits monthly.

Common questions

Do chalk, vinegar or lemon keep ants away?

They break the scent trail for a short time. The ants return when the smell fades.

Why are there more ants in the rainy season?

Rain floods ground nests and pushes colonies into buildings; in the dry season they come in for water.
