Winged Ants in Your Home: Why They Appear and How to Tell Them From Termites

A cloud of winged insects around the light after rain can be ants or termites. How to tell them apart in a minute, why they come indoors, and what to do that evening.

Quick answer. Winged ants are the young queens and males of an ant colony, sent out to mate and start new colonies. In Ho Chi Minh City this happens mostly on warm, humid evenings around the start of the rainy season, and they fly towards lights. A few winged ants from outside are harmless and die within hours. Many coming from inside a wall, floor or cupboard mean a colony is nesting in the building. The most important thing is to check they are not termites, because termite swarmers mean wood is being eaten somewhere nearby.

Ant or termite? Check three things

  Winged ant Winged termite
Waist Narrow, pinched waist Thick waist, body the same width all along
Antennae Bent at an elbow Straight, like a string of beads
Wings Front pair longer than back pair; wings stay on Four wings of equal length, much longer than the body; drop off easily

Piles of shed wings on window sills the next morning point to termites. If you are unsure, keep a few in a sealed bag or take a clear photo.

Why they come indoors

  • Light: swarmers fly to the brightest light, so they gather at windows, balcony doors and lamps.
  • A nest inside: ants nesting in wall voids, under floor tiles or in potted plants release their swarmers inside the room.
  • Weather: swarms follow rain after a dry spell, so the same evening may bring swarms across a whole district.

What to do that evening

  1. Switch off lights near open windows and doors, or close them; the swarm usually ends within an hour or two.
  2. Vacuum the winged ants; there is no need to spray them.
  3. Note where they came from: outside through a window, or out of a crack, socket or skirting board inside.
  4. The next morning, look for shed wings and for termite signs such as mud tubes on walls and hollow-sounding door frames.

When to call us

  • They are termites, or you are not sure.
  • Winged ants come out of the same crack, floor or wall more than once; the colony is inside the building.
  • Ants are also active in the kitchen and around the home during the rest of the year.

For ants, our ant control service treats the routes and the nest on monthly visits. For termites, see termite control; termite work is a separate service with its own survey and quote.

Common questions

Do winged ants damage wood?

No. Ordinary winged ants do not eat wood. If the "ants" are near damaged wood, check again for termites.

Will they bite?

Most do not. Fire ant swarmers can sting if handled.
